Identification

A blue-and-black bluet whose males closely resemble Hagen’s Bluet; the terminal appendages provide the strongest separation.

Male body color and black pattern can overlap Hagen's Bluet almost completely. A sharply focused side view of the terminal appendages is the responsible route; uncertain females may be reportable only as Enallagma.

Documented range

Marsh Bluet ranges from British Columbia to Newfoundland south to Washington, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Tennessee and Maryland; the checklist notes that the southernmost records are mostly isolated.

Colorado and Utah are the supported Southwest states and represent the southern edge. It should not be described as widespread across Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada or Texas.

Habitat & flight period

Sedge marshes, vegetated ponds and sheltered lake margins, usually in cooler regions or at elevation.

Summer is the principal flight period at interior mountain sites, with dates shifting later as elevation increases.

Finding strategy

Work the emergent-plant margin during calm conditions and make diagnostic macro photographs. Treat uncertain females conservatively.

Work sedge marshes and sheltered pond or lake margins in the short local summer. When both Hagen's and Marsh Bluets are possible, collect images of multiple individuals rather than assuming one identification applies to the whole site.

Similar species

Hagen’s Bluet is often inseparable in casual views. Boreal and Northern Bluets may also occur and require their own appendage checks.

A side-on close-up of the abdominal tip is essential; use manual focus confirmation when autofocus keeps choosing the wings.

Protect the water edge, keep a working distance, and leave the insect and its perch as found.
