Pacific Forktail ranges from British Columbia and Saskatchewan south to Baja California Sur, Sonora and New Mexico.

Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah support the species; Texas is beyond the checklist's stated southern interior limit.

Ponds, marshes and slow streams with abundant shoreline vegetation.

Adults can fly through much of the year in mild coastal California, while northern and mountain populations have a summer window.
