Identification

Mature males develop pale blue-gray pruinescence over a robust dark body; young males and females show the underlying brown and black pattern more clearly.

Mature males are large for a dancer and extensively pruinose; younger males and females reveal more of the dark brown-and-black pattern underneath. Size, river habitat and the extent of powder help separate Kiowa Dancer, but the abdominal tip should still be documented.

Documented range

Powdered Dancer ranges from California, Nevada, Montana, Manitoba and Nova Scotia south to Michoacán and Florida.

The broad range supports all seven Southwestern states considered in this collection, but the species remains linked to medium and large flowing water rather than isolated ponds.

Habitat & flight period

Medium to large rocky rivers, fast streams and spillways with exposed stones, bridge structures and woody perches.

Adults fly from late spring through summer, often persisting into early autumn in the southern part of the range.

Watch bridge abutments, boulders and logs beside strong current. Large dancers perch conspicuously and return after territorial flights.

Kiowa and other pruinescent dancers may seem similarly pale. Powdered Dancer is larger and tied strongly to substantial flowing water.

Balance the pale insect against dark rock by checking highlights; a polarizer can cost too much shutter speed for a moving perch.
