Identification

Males are green on the thorax with a dark abdomen and blue terminal patch; females include orange, green, blue and male-like forms.

The male combines green thoracic stripes, a dark abdomen and blue at the tip. Females occur in orange, green, blue and male-like forms, making a complete face, thorax and terminal series essential at sites with other Ischnura.

Documented range

Rambur's Forktail ranges from California, Kansas, Ohio and Maine south to Florida and onward to Ecuador and the Guianas; it also occurs on Bermuda, the Bahamas and West Indies and is introduced in Hawaii.

Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada and Texas support the species, while Colorado and Utah occurrence is limited enough to require current local evidence.

Habitat & flight period

Ponds, marshes, slow canals, lagoons and brackish margins with thick emergent vegetation.

The flight season is long in warm climates and more seasonal inland or at elevation.

Finding strategy

Check low shoreline stems and paired insects near floating vegetation. Photograph female individuals especially thoroughly because color forms overlap other species.

Check low stems at ponds, marshes, canals, lagoons and quiet coastal water. In brackish settings, stay on established access and avoid conflating habitat tolerance with the freshwater dependence of San Francisco Forktail.
